This new work is part of a larger series which investigates methods of communication, in this case - focusing on 'tactile tiles' and sprayed construction markings. Tactile tiles are a system of textured ground surfaces found on stairs, footpaths and train stations among other places. These tiles signal messages or warnings to visually impaired pedestrians and are interpreted through their spacing and texture. I was drawn to use this material due to it's high level of visual texture and to show how we communicate through touch. In 1976, construction workers accidentally cut into a petroleum pipe beneath the pavement in California, leading to a large explosion. This accident was the catalyst for 'the systemization of critical colour coded utility markings'. These markings are deciphered by construction workers daily and denote various meanings. For example - blue marks signal water pipes and yellow signifies gas, whereas red marks show electricity cables. These sprayed markings exemplify another kind of communication, one concerned with language. This focuses on the aesthetic qualities of techniques like pressure washing and sandblasting buffs and exploring why certain removal methods are prevalent in particular regions. This research builds upon the insights of artist Avalon Kalin, who is interviewed within this book and is regarded as one of the earliest artists to investigate this topic. The book is a project which investigates the culture of graffiti removal as an art form within Dublin, Ireland. It is an exploration of the colours, compositions and concepts offered up by these mostly undocumented public artworks that exist on Dublin's streets. This intervention involved the removal of a section of spiked security fence, which was then used to create a plaster mould that replicated the exact size and shape of the spikes. From this, ceramic replicas were cast, glazed, and fired. These delicate copies were then reintroduced into public space, where they posed as the real thing, changing an industrially produced, exclusionary object into something made by hand and with care.
